The problem for many growing businesses in thinking of becoming a more socially connected organization is why bother?

  • Agility? That’s different for every organization.
  • Engagement? It’s not like our people are leaving in droves.
  • The future of work? The future is a long way off, it’s all speculative.

The bottom line is many are successful, so why change? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

But what is the measure of success anyway? Revenue? Market share? Growth? If these are the measures, then yes, being a more socially connected organization should actually be top of mind.

To sustain each of these tangible things requires more committed and connected people not just skilled people. Commitment and connection can go hand-in-hand. People working together and knowing how different parts of the organization work AND how their work makes an impact grows commitment to the work, the organization, and the mission. In an age of growing complexity, it’s important to never rest, we must tinker with our structures and approaches continually. So yes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it but what got you here won’t get you there either.
